Burger Bars in Hamburg

(The Burger Lab / ibid.)

Brooklyn Burger Bar

(BBB Totale Bar / Eric Anders)

Hamburg’s locals love to meet for burgers at the Brooklyn Burger Bar, which is situated onsite a former pharmacy. Bare walls and beat-up furniture – the style of this burger bar could be described as “demolition chic”. Five standard burgers and a burger of the week are the main attractions on the menu. Another highlight is the cocktail card: the owners previously ran the former Streits Bar, so they know their craft well.

“No ordinary hamburger” – this the motto of Bürgerlich, which opened in late 2014 in Hamburg’s city centre. Sustainability, quality and, above all, home-made is the claim of this establishment. The idea came from two catering professionals from Hamburg, who have a long track record in the restaurant business. The Bürgerlich attaches great importance to sourcing ingredients and packaging materials from sustainable raw materials.

Exclusively vegetarian and vegan burger creations are being served at Fränzi's, which is named after the grandmother of owner Mariam Taherpour. As is known, grandma's food is the best - so it is at Fränzi's.  Here the burgers are becoming 'börgers' just like the 'Preiselbörger' with mountain cranberries and soft cheese.

Dulf's Burger

This burger bar in Winterhude is quite small and therefore somewhat confined; so it is recommended to take your burger with you, or come in the summer when the small terrace offers an additional dining area. Gourmets are drawn to Dulf's Cipriani burger with Wagyu beef, blue cheese and truffle mayonnaise. Classic burgers ranging from cheese to chicken are also on offer here, and of course Dulf’s home-made garlic, BBQ and truffle dips.

The Burger Lab

Hamburg’s traditional Pritsch bakery freshly bakes the buns to a secret home recipe and delivers them daily to The Burger Lab. All sauces are also home-made of course. The staff are always experimenting with new creations – as a burger lab should do. In addition to their five standard burgers, there are also occasional specials on the menu.

El Chanti Deli

The El Chanti Deli is just like a nice Italian restaurant in the neighbourhood – everyone would love to have one around the corner. Besides the usual classics, El Chanti offers daily burgers that change regularly: among them the Sylt burger with brown shrimp, fresh cucumber and Sylt dressing, and the Bologna burger with prosciutto and caper berries. El Chanti Deli also offers small desserts such as cheesecake and milk shakes.

Chicago Meatpackers

This place has the look of an authentic American sports bar. Tip: the burgers are great here, but make sure to try the chili-cheese fries, they are fantastic. The menu also includes a wide range of cocktails, which you can have at a bargain price during happy hour.

The Bird

According to staff, this burger bar is packed around the clock seven days a week, so be sure to reserve a seat. The hand-cut fries are well worth trying, and the toastie as burger bun is rather unconventional. It is best to visit The Bird hungry – otherwise you will leave quite a bit of food over on your plate.
